On February 19, the Time Use Initiative (TUI) participated in the debate “Rethinking time use and scheduling: the experience of Catalonia,” organised by the International Labour Organisation (ILO). The meeting focused on working time as a key element for the well-being of workers and the efficiency of companies.
During the session, it was highlighted how the length and organisation of the working day directly affect health, work-life balance, and productivity. Moving towards a new culture of working time helps to reduce time poverty, improve people’s physical and mental well-being, and strengthen more competitive and resilient businesses.
The event was attended by M. Àngels Pujols, secretary general of the Catalan Council for Labour Relations, and Marta Junqué, director of the Time Use Initiative. Both shared experiences developed in Catalonia that rethink the use of time and schedules: the Time Use Initiative, launched in 2014 with the support of the Government of Catalonia, and the proposed Law on Time Use and Schedule Rationalisation, promoted by the TUI with the support of the Spanish Ministry of Labour and Social Economy.
The debate was moderated by Catarina Braga, ILO specialist in working time and time management, and Sonia Gontero, specialist in wages and working time at the same organisation.
With this initiative, the ILO seeks to stimulate debate on a new culture of working time and promote policies that encourage healthier, fairer, and more sustainable time management in countries, regions, cities, and companies throughout Latin America.
